Best foods to consider for your MS diet

Updated: Feb 18, 2023

You've likely heard the saying before You Are What You Eat. I do believe food is medicine. I have changed my diet drastically since being diagnosed with MS. Just do a quick Google search for the link between gut health and MS and you will see recent research has suggested that there is a link between gut health and MS.

The thought is that people with MS have an imbalance in the gut microbiome. This imbalance leads to a reduction in good bacteria and an increase in harmful bacteria. This may also be part of leaky gut. I am not an expert, I am still learning, feel free to comment . This imbalance in the gut microbiome and leaky gut can trigger an immune response. This immune response leads to inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers in the central nervous system, this leads to MS.

My personal decision to improve my gut health was to go gluten-free and dairy- free. For me it was not a difficult decision or hard to do. I have experimented in the kitchen and come up with several great recipes that I will share on this website.

I primarily eat lots of leafy greens, fresh fruit, nuts, food from the earth like sweet potatoes, fresh herbs like basil and mint as well as lean chicken and fish. If I buy snacks in the store that are labeled gluten-free I do check the ingredients. If there are more than about five ingredients or ingredients that I cannot pronounce I stay away from them. It is simply not real food, gluten free or not. I also consume flax on a daily basis either through flax oil or flax meal (I make a great flax loaf)I also confused consume oily fish. I also take a probiotic, and a few other supplements but I am not overboard. I will share my supplements in a different post.

I am not an MS expert or a dietician. What I do may not be right for you. If any of this interests you, please check with your health team.
