Even before I was diagnosed with MS, I noticed I was losing my balance. Putting on pants one leg at a time became a exercise of leaning against the wall. Full transparency I thought I was becoming my father.
After my first flare up, optic neuritis, I literally could not stand on one leg for more than about 2 seconds. I have always been the kind of person that believes in figuring out the problem then finding the best and most appropriate solution.
I intuitively started doing some balance exercises. Then I started researching balance, I found the MS Gym and other physical therapist. I often watch videos from other MSers. Combining all that I have learned, my balance is much better. When I was a teen I did gymnastics, I was also into skiing, skateboarding, and surfing... all balance exercises. In my 20s and 30s, I did martial arts.
My balance has always been a part of who I am. There is no doubt in my mind doing certain exercises, even with MS you can improve your balance. I am not saying you can start walking tightropes or for that matter even walk. I am saying there are things you can do to improve your current situation. Trevor Wicken form The MS Gym does a specific eye exercise to improve balance where all you do is hold a pen and focus your eyes. Not every exercise is for everyone but Trevor Wicken from The MS Gym has exercises for all.
Here are links to two of my balance exercises.
